Best bed for the buck

Leesa Mattress > Casper Mattress > Costco > Ikea > Yogabed > Tuft and Needle > Woot Deal

Not gonna lie it will likely be a weird change, but I find sleeping in a hammock is much better than a bed. It's better for you back, you get a deeper sleep, and best of all A LOT cheaper.

Get a mattress in a box from Amazon (~$200) + a memory foam gel topper from walmart (~$60) + a plush topper from Amazon (~$30) - feels better than those $1000+ mattresses at the store

If you need a complete bed (frame, head board, mattress, etc) out the door, the value for $ is pretty good.

Box springs do help with aeration of the mattress. A mattress on the floor can get moldy on the bottom.
I use slats. I bought the fancy Ikea ones[1] . I already had an Ikea bed that came with plain wooden slats and didn't really need to spend money on new ones. I tried all of the mattresses and got the one I liked best, got the slats, mattress protector, pillow and 100 tealights and was out the door for less than $500 including tax.

Check out Ikea online for bed frames. They have some very simple and cheap pine frames (Fjellse for full, Tarva for Queen) that are real wood, not press board. You can sand and stain/oil them to get a nice bed frame for under $200. If they aren't your style look around stores.

Quality pillow topper

I did a lot of research and read a ton of reviews and just ordered a Leesa foam mattress. It's easy to find a $75 off coupon, a full size came to $715 with free shipping and no tax. I bought a box spring locally for $99 and ordered a mattress protector off Amazon for $28 and a new set of sheets (1800 threads) for $40. I spent another $30 on an egg crate pad to help keep it cooler.

I found this site useful for reviews http://sleepopolis-mattress-reviews.com/[1] Edit: this one too http://www.sleepsherpa.com/

My sister worked for Sleep Country.. we just waited until Costco had a good quality deal that was close enough to price match there. Price matched it used some more discounts. Don't remember what I paid but it was way low and I got a damn good mattress.
TLDR Look for somewhere with comparable stuff that you can price match to a larger store for name brand items

You have a lot of great suggestions here, but I am going to throw my two cents in. I went to a local but small chain. I got the box spring and the frame and delivery for free. My husband laid down on the mattress he liked, twirled his credit card in his hand, and said if you can do free delivery and bed frame I will buy it right now. We didn't spend over 800 and it is the MOST COMFORTABLE BED EVER. Ikea is great. Costco can be great, but if you don't have those near you; my husband's trick might work.

These aren't your 70's style beds. They are essentially mattresses with water inside. Best of all it only costs about $300 to replace the bladder if needed.
